Hyacinth Macaw

As the world’s largest parrots, hyacinth macaws can grow up to forty inches from head to tail with a four-foot wingspan and weigh as much as 3.7 pounds. They require the care of not just experienced bird owners but those with both the time and financial resources to address their physical and mental needs.

Financial Obligations

A hyacinth macaw’s alluring cobalt blue color, and yellow-framed eyes, and beak as well as their impressive size may be tempting for novice bird owners, but one should keep in mind that these birds can grow almost as large as a bald eagle. Because of their size and endangered status, owning this magnificent creature as a pet comes with a high price tag from initial cost to habitat maintenance.

A young hyacinth macaw can cost up to $10,000 with a mature adult costing even more.

Setting Up an Engaging ; Healthy Habitat

Due to their size, hyacinth macaws require a lot of space to get the physical and mental stimulation they need. To ensure your macaw has enough room, investing in a custom-made (and often expensive) stainless-steel cage is recommended.

The need for a durable cage stems from their powerful and destructive beak. Their beak can apply up to 200 pounds per square inch, which is why they require an abundance of toys and a cage with strong enough bars.

Chew toys will prevent overgrown beaks and prevent your macaw from becoming neurotic, destructive, or self-harming in nature. It is also important to keep them socially and emotionally happy. Hyacinth macaws are social creatures, so you should only get one if you have the time to dedicate a healthy amount of social interaction.

Veterinary Care

Hyacinth macaws require regular veterinarian checkups to check for common diseases like the Macaw wasting disease, papilloma, and psittacosis.
