INDIAN RINGNECK
Status In The Wild: Least Concern
The Indian Ringneck Parakeet (also known as the rose-ringed parakeet or ring-necked parakeet) is a brilliantly colored bird capable of a broad vocabulary, but not known for its affectionate nature.
APPEARANCE
The ring-necked parakeet comes in a stunning range of colors including bright yellows, greens, and blues. Males of the species have a red beak, three collars of color around the neck, and black markings on the face. Females of the species do not have these distinguishing characteristics.
The adult rose-ringed parakeet measures around 16-inches long and weighs around 4-ounces.
VOCALIZATIONS
This parrot species is very vocal and begins speaking by the time it turns a year old. Vocalizations include speech and screeching.
A bored rose-ringed parakeet can be exceptionally loud, so they must be kept stimulated.
LIFESPAN
The rose-ringed parakeet lives to an average of twenty to thirty years in the wild. When kept in captivity, though, this beautiful bird can live up to fifty years!
LIFE AS A PET
The ringneck parakeet may be incredibly intelligent and capable of speech, but they are also quite aloof. Unlike other parrot species, this is not a bird that is known for affection.
Adolescent ringnecks are particularly difficult to care for as they go through a period of testing boundaries and increased aggression. This phase passes quickly, however.
PAIRING
Ringneck parakeets generally do not do well with a companion bird.
A ringneck will take a mate during mating season, but unlike other parrots, they are not monogamous and will lose interest in their mate.
