Green Cheeked Conures

The Green Cheeked Conure is part of a family of small parakeets native to South America. It has a distinctive and colorful appearance, including mostly green feather, periophthalmic rings, a mostly maroon tail, blue wing feathers, grey beak, brownish-black cap and … green cheeks, leading to its name.

Less than100 grams in weight and below a foot in length, these birds are a favorite with pet owners looking for their first birds. They are cheap, easy to maintain and extremely amiable if a bit shy. They are known to be intensely bonded with their owners, to the extent that they will be affectionate to humans even if they have an avian mate.

Sometimes mistaken for maroon bellied conures, these birds are distinctly different. They do coexist peacefully with their maroon bellied or black capped conure cousins. In fact, they will cross breed if the opportunity presents itself.
