Sun Conure
Status In The Wild: Endangered
The spectacular golden coloration of the sun conure makes it a favored companion bird. But, while stunning to look at, this South American bird is also personable, intelligent, and interactive.
APPEARANCE
The Aratinga solstitialis is a medium-sized parrot with striking golden feathers and orange, green and blue markings. There is no discernable plumage or size difference between the male and the female, and both measure around 12-inches long and weigh an average of 4-ounces.
VOCALIZATIONS
Although it is a medium-sized bird, this is one of the loudest in the parrot family (especially when kept in captivity.) Although known for screaming as well as mimicking sounds, Aratinga solstitialis is known for talking.
LIFESPAN
The Aratinga solstitialis has a lifespan of approximately 15-30 years. Wild birds tend to live between 15 to 20-years, while captive birds can live anywhere from 20 to 30-years.
LIFE AS A PET
The captive Aratinga solstitialis is not a good bird for the first-time bird owner as they require regular and consistent training and frequent socialization. Without these things, this bird can quickly become a handful.
With regular stimulation, interaction, and ongoing training, this is an affectionate family parrot. The Aratinga solstitialis can nip, become a vocal nuisance, and become destructive when bored or provoked.
PAIRING
Aratinga solstitialis are monogamous birds and mate for life, forming strong bonds with each other. With this said, unless a bird is already part of a bonded pair, they can live perfectly happily without other bird companions.
