GREENWING MACAW
Status In The Wild: Least Concern
The Greenwing Macaw is the second-largest parrot species, but despite its size, it’s known for being an easy-going and affectionate bird.
APPEARANCE
The Ara chloroptera is brilliant red from head to chest and has a green band just below the shoulders. A vibrant blue sits below the green, and it covers the wings and tips of the red tail feathers.
The adult Ara chloroptera measures around 40-inches long and weighs between 3-4 pounds. The wingspan of this bird is approximately 49-inches.
VOCALIZATIONS
Although able to speak (an average of 15 words), the Ara chloroptera is more of a screecher and screamer. This macaw is a quieter bird than some other large parrots, but it is still a loud bird and not ideal for apartment life.
LIFESPAN
The Ara chloroptera lives for an average of 30-years in the wild. In captivity, though, this large parrot has an average lifespan of 70-years!
LIFE AS A PET
Ara chloroptera is a very social bird, so to thrive, they need regular and ongoing social interaction. Although this parrot makes a wonderful companion, it is an expensive parrot to keep and demands a lot of time and attention.
Ara chloroptera is quickly bored without mental stimulation, and a bored macaw is a challenge!
PAIRING
This social bird is happy to live with another macaw of the same size if given enough space for both to thrive. This macaw is also a bird that can live without another bird friend, but in this case, they do need plenty of time with their human companion.
